What is Physiotherapy ?
Physiotherapy is a health care profession concerned with the assessment, maintenance, and restoration of the physical function and performance of the body. It is a distinct form of care which can be performed both in isolation or in conjunction with other types of medical management eg post surgery or while on medication. The aim of our Physiotherapy service at Collins Avenue is to help provide our patients with a speedy and complication-free return to normal activity.
What to expect when you visit ?
During your first visit to Collins Avenue Physiotherapy we will review your medical history and assess your physical condition. We will discuss your symptoms and answer any questions you may have. Our therapists will provide you with an accurate diagnosis before treating you to relieve pain and regain movement, see Our Treatments for list of 'hands on' manual therapy that we use.You will then be advised on how to best self-manage the problem at home and where appropriate, be given an individualized home exercise programme.
Our Facility
At Collins Avenue Physiotherapy we have facilities for private individual patient management and for class based management. Our clinic is completely based on ground floor level allowing easy access for those with mobility impairments. There is full wheelchair accessibility.
What Do We Treat?
Back and Neck Pain
We specialise in providing physiotherapy for spinal pain causing neck pain, back pain or even headache. This may occur for any number of reasons eg disc injury, poor desk posture or from involvement in an accident ie whiplash associated disorders or a lifting injury. Our programmes for these conditions incorporate a detailed assessment, ‘hands-on’ treatment and ,where appropriate, a specific exercise rehabilitation plan prescribed to meet the needs of each individual. Our aim is to relieve pain, restore movement and reduce the likelihood of re-occurrence. Research based physiotherapy for back pain and physiotherapy for neck pain have been shown to be very effective.
Where indicated, our team of therapists are trained to use our Ultrasound Imaging Equipment to assess the deep core low back muscles (eg Transversus Abdominus)- these muscles are integral to the rehabilitation of low back injuries.
We have also devised a specific programme for management of persistent Whiplash Associated Disorders, based on the most recent research. New data has shown specific muscle, joint and nerve changes that occur with this condition, allowing us to provide the most effective treatment strategies.
Sports Injuries
We are fortunate to have physiotherapists who have managed a wide range of muscular and joint injuries effecting sports people, be they elite athletes or recreational sports people. Management of these conditions will include assessment, diagnosis and a sports specific analysis of the movement problem. We have worked closely with the Irish Boxing Team, the Dublin Football Team, the Dublin Hurling Team and some of our international athletes from many other disciplines. Whether you are suffering from an overuse injury while preparing for the marathon, or have developed foot pain having recently started out on the golf course, you are in safe experienced hands at Collins Avenue Physiotherapy. Physiotherapy for sports injuries is one of the most common reasons people attend our clinic.
Orthopaedic Rehabilitation
Physiotherapy can be a crucial component of successful recovery from trauma or orthopaedic surgery eg post hip/knee replacement or post fracture. Our aim in managing these conditions is to restore normal movement and strength, leading to a painfree improved quality of life. Many Arthritic conditions can also be greatly improved in this way.
Womens Health
We have developed a particular expertise in managing some of the pelvic and low back pain conditions that can occur before and after childbirth. We have designed programmes for managing these conditions, eg symphysis pubis dysfunction/SPD, in a safe way.We also have a specialised service providing help for patients suffering from incontinence or other problems related to weakness of the pelvic floor eg some forms of prolapse. For more information please contact the clinic directly.
Our Pilates programme includes ante-natal and post-natal classes led by our Pilates instructor who is also a chartered physiotherapist.
Osteoporosis Programme
Research has shown that Osteoporosis (Brittle Bone Disease) is far more common, amongst both men and women, than we may have previously suspected. We now know that specific weight bearing exercises and diet choices can help with bone density. If you have been diagnosed with Osteoporosis or Osteopaenia then you will benefit from this programme. It involves
-an introductory talk about lifestyle choices and general exercise
-5 once weekly exercise classes teaching you the most suitable exercises for building your bone strength
-a talk on relevant Nutrition from our Clinical Nutritionist who is a member of the Irish Nutrition and Dietetics Institute.
The aim of this programme is to empower you to self–manage your condition with an informed approach to exercise and diet, in conjunction with whatever medical management that may have been subscribed by your doctor. All exercise classes are restricted to 6 persons and led by a chartered physiotherapist.
